I WAS SHOT IN THE FACE WITH A 22 MAGNUM RIFLE ON APRIL 4TH
2009 WHILE TAKING PHOTOS OF MY DOGS, AN OLD LOG CABIN AND OLD HORSE DRAWN WAGONS
IN WEST VIRGINIA!

The photo above was taken almost 3 weeks after
being shot. As you can see, healing is going to be a long process.
Look closely at my jaw line....those are stitches from where they had to
cut me open to rebuild my missing jaw.
Above that pretty band around my throat is another incision that they
originally made when I first arrived at the hospital to open up my
airways and look to see what damage the bullet had caused.
The band around my neck holds that white thing in place called a
tracheotomy. This is how I am now breathing.

My name is Kelly Peet and I am here by the Grace
of God. I am a pet, landscape, old farm building and equipment
photographer who aspires to turn professional. I’ve decided to tell you
all what happened to me, because if it can happen to me, it can happen
to you.
On April 4th 2009 I had taken my 3 German Shepherds, Jasmine, Maja, and
Binka to an old farm owned by Don Byrd and his wife to take some photos
of the old 1800’s log cabin and horse drawn wagons sitting there. I had
previously requested permission from Don Byrd about 1-2 years ago, and
visited the farm several times a year for more photos.
I was wearing a purple windbreaker with a yellow backpack
on my back, and was laying on my stomach to get a better angle of the
old log cabin, and while taking pictures the morning stillness was
shattered by a gunshot. At the same moment I realized that I had been
shot in the face. I put my hand up to my face and it came away coated
with bright red thick blood. I rose to my feet while trying to yell that
I had been shot, but only gurgled. Blood was filling my lungs.
There was a house in the distance and I knew that I had to walk there
and try to get help or I would die.
The house was a long ways away.
Step by step I took…trying to get to that house before I passed out. I
went down a steep creek bank, and had to make it up the other side. I
knew that if I passed out…I would die right where I was due to the
seclusion of the area. In fact, I might lie there for a month or so
before being discovered.
I prayed to God while walking…I asked for forgiveness of my sins, and
told him that I was ready to meet him in heaven if that is what he
wanted. But if he wanted me to stay on Earth, I’d need his help. I put
my entire trust and faith in him. My life was in his hands…whatever he
wanted, I was agreeable towards, and I just kept walking towards that
house.
While walking through the creek, I noticed a Chow Chow dog that belonged
to the house I was walking towards, in a fight with my dogs in the creek
area. I don’t know who started the fight, and even though I desperately
wanted to try and break up the fight, I new that I couldn’t. I was
already in the fight of my life. So I kept on walking, and hoped that
Maja, Binka and her unborn babies, and the Chow would be okay. I put
them in God’s hand as well.
I finally made it to that house. It was a miracle. I then knocked on the
door and a man answered. To my shock he admitted to having shot me. In
the background I remember a woman repeating those words. One moment he
would say that he had been shooting at a coyote, and the next moment he
would say that he had been shooting at a dog. He wasn't sticking with
his story on what he had been shooting at. Regardless....what gives
someone the right to fire onto a neighbors land like that?
I sat on their front yard bleeding, and while waiting on an ambulance I
wrote on paper that the dogs were fighting. I wanted someone to break up
the fight before any of them were hurt. I also wrote down all my
important contact information because I had no ID on myself since I just
took a 1-mile country walk to the cabin and didn’t think I’d need it. I
wrote whom I was, where I lived, important people to contact, and I
believe some notes on who to contact about my dogs.
While sitting and bleeding in the yard, I worried about going to the
hospital because of my illness with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS).
Chemicals in hospitals and fragrances on people make me very ill, so
going to the hospital was as scary to me as being shot.
Finally the police arrived and took a photo of my smashed in bloody
face. The ambulance then arrived. I was still alive…another miracle.
I survived the drive to the hospital that usually takes me about 1 – 1 ¼
hours to drive. Another miracle.
They asked me in the emergency room what happened to me…and I wrote on
paper and told them. During all this I had clung to my new Nikon D90
(which was coated with my thick red sticky blood) as if my life depended
on it. I had just bought my dream camera in Dec. 2008 and used every
penny I had to get it. If I lived through this…. it was going to be with
my camera at my side. I wasn’t going to take a chance of it disappearing
anywhere while I was sick. I probably would have jumped off the bed to
grab it if anyone had tried to take it! This camera was my hope for the
future…it was my hope to begin a career as a professional photographer!
Finally, while still writing to the doctors, they said that we had to
hurry and I was then wheeled into surgery where my neck was sliced open
to enable me to breath and for them to explore where the bullet had
ricocheted to.
Afterwards I was sent to the ICU (Intensive Care Unit) where I spent one
week on life support. The bullet had entered and disintegrated my right
jawbone, then traveled down to strike my voice box and injure the area
that allows me to swallow, or breath. After striking those areas, it hit
my aorta, which is my main blood supply to my brain, and stopped. Had it
gone ¼ inch further I would be dead. I would have died right where I had
been shot. It was another miracle from God.
I was and still am, unable to speak, and my
flap that allows me to swallow or breath air isn’t working right.
Everything I eat or drink goes straight to my lungs, and I end up in a
coughing fit.
While in ICU, my son Derick Reese, my previous mother in law Jeannie
Filipek, Richard Reese my previous husband and his wife Dawn Reese came
to my aid in assisting to find my German Shepherds Jasmine, Maja, and
Binka. After being shot 1 mile away from home the dogs had to find their
own way back to the house. I was especially concerned about them because
of the dog fight and hoped they had not been injured. I was also
extremely worried because Binka is pregnant, and Jasmine has epilepsy
and has suffered brain damage due to all the seizures. But the real
miracle here was that we had not been on good terms for over 12 years.
Over the past few years I had been praying for them, and God answered.
They reached out the hand of friendship to me during this ordeal, and I
gladly accepted.
They drove from their home to my area daily to search for the dog’s even
though it was a 80 minute round trip. Finally Binka and Maja were found
uninjured, but Jasmine was still lost. I worried so much over the dogs
during this time period, but just had to place my faith in the Lord.
Finally Jasmine was found. I’m sure that she had many seizures, but she
finally found her way to my next-door neighbors and so she was finally
safe. During that first week after being found she suffered many
seizures, and has been mourning to see me since. Jeannie took Jasmine
home with her so that she can receive her medicine consistently, and
Maja and Binka were put in my very large dog pen at my house. Derick,
Jeannie, Richard and Dawn assisted in making the long commute out to my
home to feed and water the dogs for me so that they would be taken care
of and I wouldn’t be worried about them. Words can’t express how
grateful I am to them for ensuring that my babies were safe, and I am
thrilled that we are beginning a new relationship as friends. God truly
does perform miracles.
After ICU I went for my second surgery and my throat and windpipe were
sliced open for a tracheotomy. I am now breathing through a plastic tube
in my throat instead of my nose and mouth. After this surgery
I accepted one dosage of pain medicine, then I
refused to take any additional medications, including pain medication.
During this time I also had them disconnect the food that was being fed
to me through a feeding tube that went through my nose down into my
stomach. Due to my Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) the medications
and liquid food they were giving me were making me so ill I almost
wished I would just die and get it over with.
Fortunately for me, the hospital did take my Multiple Chemical
Sensitivity seriously enough to give me a private room with it’s own air
supply that was separate from the hospital. This meant that I didn’t
have to worry about chemical cleaner odors from other rooms. The privacy
meant that I didn’t have to worry about a roommates guests coming in
with perfume, hairspray, shampoo fragrances, body lotions, or one of the
worst odors…dryer sheet odors on clothing. All of these make me very ill
very quickly. They mess up my nervous system and cause horrible migraine
headaches, reduced cognitive ability, asthma type of attacks, vision
blurring, short-term memory loss, co-ordination difficulties and many
other problems. Therefore I was very grateful for the private room.
My parents arrived from Florida shortly after I was moved to my room
from ICU, and they guarded the door like bloodhounds. It was almost
comical to see them sniffing people for me to see if they were safe to
enter. My nose wasn’t working (and still isn’t working) well enough for
my to smell on my own, so my parents would make people leave if they had
fragrance on. It was so wonderful to have them helping me.
This time period was critical for me. I’ve had
pneumonia several times in my life, and I knew I was right on the verge
of getting it again. I was having a horrible time breathing and my lungs
were all congested. My parents went and bought me vitamins, and I
literally lived on juice and vitamins for the next 3 weeks because the
hospital didn’t have any organic foods. My parents bought food
supplements from the local health store, but they made me very ill due
to the “Natural Flavorings” in them, which is just a nice way of saying
they have the toxic poisons…. Aspartame and MSG. Therefore…. here I am
coming out of my second surgery, with MCS, unable to speak, unable to
eat or drink except through a feeding tube that ran through my nose into
my stomach, with no food to put into it because the hospital didn’t
carry organics, and didn’t want to try to do so, while fighting off
pneumonia.
Well, shortly after my second surgery where the tracheotomy was
inserted, it was time for plastic surgery to rebuild my jawbone that had
been obliterated. I was taking large amounts of vitamins, and saying a
lot of prayers to God because I could barely breath. I was really
concerned that I was to close to pneumonia to survive this surgery, so I
prayed to God, and he showed me bible verses that reassured me that it
would be okay. So I used another home remedy with hydrogen peroxide and
swished my mouth with this about 20 times. This flooded my body with
oxygen and loosened up the thick gooey mucus that was blocking my
breathing. I was able to breath, and survived the surgery where my jaw
was reconstructed, and then my jaw was wired shut. Now I couldn’t open
my mouth for at least 3-4 weeks, and maybe longer.
Afterwards, my feeding tube came out twice. I don’t know if you’ve ever
had a feeding tube or not, but the bad part isn’t in having one. The
horrible, awful part is when they put it in! I gagged, coughed, and
thought they were going to poke my eyeballs out with that thing from the
inside out. It took 3 nurses, 3 doctors, countless tries of which 2 of
them went right into my lungs, before they got my second one in. It was
a living nightmare that I hope none of you have to go through.
Unfortunately…I coughed the slippery little sucker right back up 7 hours
later.
Since my throat was so traumatized from the bullet and surgeries, the
doctors and I decided to wait a few days before trying again. In the
meantime I was left without a means to get nutrition in my body for
almost 6 days. Finally it was time to try again, and a very capable
nurse got it in on the first attempt with little trauma to me. Praise
God! I was now able to get some juices and vitamins back into my system
even if I couldn’t have food. I went for 3 weeks with no real nutrition
except for a few cartons of milk towards the end, juice, water, and
vitamins.
Once more…another miracle that I survived all these surgeries, fought
off pneumonia, and was healing with no nutrition. I didn’t get a meal
from the hospital until the very last day, hours before I was being
discharged. They finally broke down and bought me organics, cooked it up
and put it in a blender so that I could get it down my feeding tube. Now
they can say that they fed me organics. To bad they couldn’t have done
that 3 weeks earlier so that I could have had nutrition to heal on, and
wouldn’t have went hungry for 3 weeks. As I mentioned earlier, I
couldn’t eat their food due to all the chemicals that are in it that
make me very ill due to my MCS. At home I eat raw, juiced, and cooked
organic foods that I fix from scratch. Rarely do I eat any foods that
come in a can, plastic, or box that have been pre-processed.
To sum this up…here are the events that I consider to be miracles from
God.
1st Miracle
I survived a 22 Magnum bullet to my face,
which should have killed me.
2nd Miracle
The bullet stopped after hitting the outer
edge of my aorta vein that feeds blood to my brain. ¼ inch more and I
would have been dead.
3rd Miracle
I survived a 1000 – 2000 foot walk for help
while bleeding.
4th Miracle
I survived waiting in the yard for the
ambulance to arrive in rural WV.
5th Miracle
I survived an ambulance drive to a
hospital that normally takes around an hour or more to drive.
6th Miracle
I survived 4 surgeries with 3 of them being
major.
7th Miracle
I survived being in a hospital with
Multiple Chemical Sensitivity.
8th Miracle
I did not get pneumonia.
9th Miracle
I survived being in a hospital after being
shot and going through 4 surgeries with no nutrition for 3 weeks other
than a few milks, some juice, water, and vitamins.
10th Miracle
My dogs were uninjured from the fight, and
later found their way home.
11th Miracle
My previous mother in law, previous husband
and his wife, came to my aid to find my dogs and take care of them while
I was sick, even though we have not been on good terms in approximately
12 years.
12th Miracle
My parents made the drive safely from Florida,
and brought me the vitamins that I needed to make it through the
surgeries, and go without the medications (including pain medications) that made me very sick. They were also able to protect me from
chemicals the majority of the time through smelling people to ensure
they didn’t have any fragrances on.
13th Miracle
My camera was undamaged, even after being
coated with blood. (Update 11/23/09 ...my 10 month old camera broke down
in Sept. five months after I was shot. I believe that being coated with
blood may have contributed or caused it to malfunction. I was pretty
upset and thought that not only would I miss my first spring with a
decent camera due to being shot, but thought that I was going to miss my
first fall as well. I almost did miss fall completely, but fortunately
my camera came back from repair just in time for me to grab 2 days of
fall photography before the leaves fell.)
14th Miracle
I was given a private room with it’s own air supply. This protected me
from chemicals and severe reactions due to my Multiple Chemical
Sensitivity (MCS)
15th Miracle
My surgeons and their staff were amazing miracles! Scott R Gibbs, MD was
the brilliant surgeon who opened up my airways when I originally
arrived, stabilized me, and later inserted the trachea for me to breath
through. (The first airway incision on my neck was sewn up very
carefully with small stitches when the trachea was inserted on the
second surgery, and has now faded to the point that it is not very
noticeable. Thank you Dr. Gibbs for saving my life and doing a great job
on the stitches! As an added bonus...not only is Dr. Gibbs and expert
surgeon, he is also a kind, gentle, cheerful man with a big smile on his
caring face. He is the type of doctor who would be at home in a Norman
Rockwell painting. How blessed I was to have a surgeon like him to help
me.
My other surgeon is a plastic
surgeon. His name is Farbid B Mozaffari, MD, and he is the amazing
surgeon who took my deformed, smashed in face, with the right side of my
shoved in jaw hanging down approximately several inches further
than the left jaw, and put it back together like a master artist. He
replaced my missing jaw bone with metal, carefully wired up my teeth and
jaw without damaging any of my teeth, and then stitched my jaw back
together with meticulous, tiny stitches. (As of this date 12/07/09 most
people can not tell that there was ever anything wrong with my face. The
scar has faded to the point that it is very difficult to see. I credit
the scar fading not only to his beautiful tiny stitches, but also to me
applying vitamin E to the wound while it was healing.) Dr.
Mozaffari is also a very pleasant, kind man, and truly cares about his
patients, and the quality of his plastic surgery artwork. Thank you Dr.
Mozaffari for rebuilding my face and saving my teeth!

I am also going to use this time
to thank all the other nurses and doctors who assisted with saving my
life and putting me back together. All of you are my miracles from
God. Thank you.
As of today
Sunday, May 03, 2009
(almost 1 month later), I still cannot
speak, and cannot swallow food or liquids. My mouth is still wired shut,
I still have a hole in my throat that I breath through, I have a feeding
tube in my stomach. I’m not sure if I’ll ever be able to speak again, or
swallow, but the doctors are optimistic so I’ll just leave that in God’s
hands.
Throughout all this, I have harbored no anger towards the man who shot
me, and forgave him almost instantly. But I do believe he should be held
accountable for shooting me by our legal system. There should be a price
to pay when you shoot someone and cause him or her physical and
emotional pain, financial distress, and disfigure his or her face.
I do NOT believe in tougher gun laws. Guns don’t kill people, people
kill people. There should be tougher criminal penalties to shooting a
human, or even someone’s pet. Make people responsible for their actions
by enforcing tougher laws for those that injure others.
I thank God for my family and for the other people that assisted in
saving my life. It was defiantly a team effort, from my family, to my
previous mother in law, previous husband and his wife, to the doctors
and nurses who helped to put me back together. I also thank all the
people who have been praying for me during this, and have sent me some
money to help out. It has meant so much to me and I am so grateful.
God has blessed me…I am a miracle. Now I just need to figure out what
mission God wants me to begin, for he certainly went all out in ensuring
that I stay alive. I believe he is molding and sculpting me into the
type of person he wants me to be through this. Now hopefully I’ll have
the wisdom to put it to good use.

UPDATE 05/10/09
I just want to say thank you to everyone for the
support, prayers, and advice. Thanks so much everyone!
Good news! I can now whisper a little!
I'm still having problems swallowing though. Wow!! You never realize how
important swallowing is until you can't do it anymore. If it wasn't for
modern medicine and the feeding tube inserted through my stomach
wall...I'd be dead by now from lack of liquids and food.
But...I sure would love to sink my teeth into a homemade organic pizza
and just savor every bite. You don't get to taste food when it goes
through a feeding tube, so psychologically I feel as if I haven't eaten
since April 4th.
I'm going to pig out once I can eat food again! It will be a big day of
celebration!
UPDATE 06/14/09
I can whisper consistently, but still don't
have my voice. The doctor said on my recent checkup that the left side
of my voice box is still paralyzed and not moving.
The right side of my face still has a numb area where can't feel, but
hopefully the nerves will grow.
My feeding tube was removed last week! Yeah!! I am now able to eat, and
pigged out! I have to eat really slow or it will still sometimes go in
my lungs...but I ate for a solid 3 hours and enjoyed every mouthful!
My jaw is still swollen where I have the metal plate from plastic
surgery rebuilding my jaw bone, and seems to swell more when I become
active and try to do things around the house or take photos.
I still have the trachea in my throat that was placed there for me to
breath through, but hopefully it can be removed soon.
The bullet is still in me next to my aorta. They can't remove it without
doing a lot of damage, so it looks like I will have to live with it. I
hope it isn't made from lead because I already have lead poisoning.
I went on my first photo shoot about a week ago, and took some photos of
the dogs on a foggy morning. Yeah!
Today I took pictures of my
5
week old German Shepherd puppies! They are so adorable, and one already
has her little cute ears up! I'll try to post a few pictures soon, but
the majority will be posted at
www.puppymatrix.com and
www.kellypeet.com because I will be listing them for sale and taking deposits. It's so
hard to part with these little cuties!
A few days ago I went on a clothing shopping spree at Goodwill and
bought lots of bright orange, yellow, and red clothing to wear on my
photo shoots so that hopefully I am never shot again. The clothing
didn't help me before since I was wearing a purple top with a bright
yellow backpack when shot, but it made me feel better to buy them.
Well, that's about it for now. Thanks so much everyone for the support
and prayers! God is still working miracles on me :-)
Update 7/22/09
Once more...thanks to everyone for all the
support...you all are awesome!
Things are about the same since my last update. I've been really busy
taking photos (and trying to post them ) of my 10 six week old German
Shepherd puppies and taking care of them! Wow...I love them dearly, and
they are so cute...but when they hit 8 weeks I am usually ready to let
them go to their new homes where they can get plenty of individual TLC
:-) I try to give them a lot of love and attention...but there is only
one of me, and it's difficult for me to do a lot of bending over due to
the trachea in my throat since it cuts off my air and also starts
bleeding when I do to much bending and activity.
Thanks everyone for all the prayers and kind thoughts!
Kelly
UPDATE 8/31/09
I want to thank everyone for all the prayers,
kind comments, generous well wishes, and support. This has aided me so
much in my healing...and I love reading your comments. Please keep them
coming.
I'm still whispering...when I call people that don't know me they
sometimes hang up on me because they think I'm a prank caller. I find
this amusing most of the time...but do have my moments where I find it
frustrating.
I still can't chew food other than really soft food. My bite is off, and
one jaw is higher than the other. Plus...when I chew, it feels like the
flesh is pulling away from the metal and bone fragments. It's a really
nasty feeling. My plastic surgeon told me that it will take about a year
for it to heal and for the swelling to go down.
My teeth are also loose...I'm not sure why...maybe from my mouth being
wired shut, or because I can't chew real food?
I'm also going through empty nest syndrome...all my puppies except for
Sunshine (renamed Diva) are gone. It's quiet around here now with most
of my babies gone. They sure did bring a lot of joy into my life when I
needed it most.
Well...it's time to concentrate on other things now...like working up
all the fantastic photos that I took of them!
Once more...thanks so much everyone for the wonderful support.
Kelly
Update 09/05/09
I'm still whispering...it's louder now, but
still not a voice. Front teeth are still loose and can't chew food very
well.
Update 11/23/09
I'm still whispering, still no voice,
teeth still loose, still can't chew food very well.
I've realized something that is very serious to
me...my sense of smell since being shot isn't good enough to warn me of
when I have being exposed to chemicals. This is really bad news. I
depend on my nose to warn me of chemical exposures such as perfume,
shampoo, hair conditioner, dryer sheet odors, etc. on people and odors
such as air fresheners, cleaning chemicals, etc. in the environment. Now
that my nose isn't working it's like a blind person trying to cross an
intersection on a road without assistance. I often don't know when I'm
being exposed now until I become ill. This is serious. There have been
times that I have been out shopping and been exposed without my
knowledge, and after a bad exposure I have difficulty with my vision,
co-ordination, speech, and cognitive abilities, and it becomes very
difficult for me to drive my car home. Things such as staying in my
lane, noticing other vehicles, responding to other vehicles and traffic
signs becomes a major ordeal. Prior to being shot I could move away from
the odors when I smelled them.
The right side of my face still has a numb area
where can't feel, but hopefully the nerves will grow.
The bullet is still in me next to my aorta with a
lot of shrapnel throughout my neck. Swallowing still takes extra effort.
'I've been having really severe disabling
migraines for the past week or more. My teeth were affected by my jaw
bone being disintegrated, and I think a chain reaction has begun with
severe pain and swelling around my teeth and jaw, which in turn gives me
horrible migraine headaches. Unfortunately I can't find anyone to
perform dental work on me since I am unable to pay to get them fixed and
I don't have an income to make payments with.
I've been having problems re-training my dogs to
respond to me since I don't have a voice. I've made some progress
teaching them to respond to my whistle or hand clapping, but we are
still in the training phase.
A few months ago I couldn't get a doctor to remove
my trachea in my throat that I used for breathing. He wanted me to take
a barium swallow test to ensure that everything I swallowed was going
into my stomach instead of my lungs. I refused to take this test due to
my Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) and due to the fact that I had
been swallowing okay for about four weeks, and had been able to breath
fairly well through my nose and mouth. Therefore....I got tired of
trying to convince him so I took it out myself. My breathing still isn't
where it was prior to being shot, but at least I don't have that trachea
in anymore.
Now for the positive side...I'm still alive, I can
walk, whisper, communicate, my brain is undamaged, I'm not paralyzed or
grossly disfigured. My camera is working again, I was able to take
pictures of a beautiful WV fall, my dogs are doing well, my family is
healthy, I have food, water, and shelter. I have a lot to be grateful
for. Things could have been much worse. I praise God for his blessings.
This will be a VERY SPECIAL THANKSGIVING this year...one I almost missed
being alive for.
